India's steel production and demand will grow rapidly in the next decade

Benefiting from the growth of domestic economy and speeding up of urbanization, the output and consumption of Indian steel are expected to grow rapidly in the ten-year period of 2020-2030.

Aruna Sharma, secretary general of the Indian Iron and Steel Institute, said recently that the government's major push for infrastructure construction is the main driving force for Indian steel demand growth. In the next 10 years and 20 years, India's copper, iron ore, steel demand will continue to grow. India's per capita consumption of steel from 50 kg to 60 kg took seven years, reaching 64 kg this year, only 18 months.

April-September this year, India's steel consumption 43 million tons, up 4.3%, steel production 52 million tons, up 5%. And as of March 31 this year 2016-17, steel consumption 84 million tons, up 3% for the slowest in three years, even if 11% increase in steel output, reaching a record 101 million tons level. It is estimated that the annual crude steel output capacity of India in the fiscal year of 2021 will increase from the current 126 million tons to 150 million tons more than Japan's 118 million tons, becoming the world's second largest steel producer behind China by then, estimating an estimated 785 million tons of China. The ambitious goal of the Indian government is to increase crude steel capacity to 300 million tons by 2030.

Domestic steel mills in India are expanding their capacity to meet growing demand. Optimistic outlooks, as well as expectations of price recovery and growth, are spurring the share prices of the three largest steel companies in India to go up, with Tata Steel up 76% and JSW up 59% this year.
